Academic Resources for Undergraduate Students

Academic advisors are members of the department’s faculty. Their role is to offer students guidance during their years of study with regard to the Department’s programme of studies and other academic issues and to help students make the best choices possible with regard to their choice of specialization, based on their performance and interests. Advisors maintain regular contact with students in order to discuss any difficulties they might face during their studies at the university, and to suggest potential solutions to these problems. To make collaboration with students more effective, the Department assigns four academic advisors, one for each year of study.

Every member of the teaching staff holds regular office hours – at least two hours per week – during which time students can come and discuss issues concerning their studies and performance. The office hours are announced at the beginning of each semester and are available from the Department Secretariat and from the Department’s web site. Students can also request an appointment at a time other than the regularly scheduled office hours following communication with the teaching staff member.

To enhance scientific research and the dissemination of knowledge, the University hosts the Centre for Economic Research (CER). In collaboration with other universities, academics, research centres, public organisations, and private firms, the CER promotes the University’s research and education. Scholarships are offered to students who excel in their studies but have limited financial resources. Students can apply to a number of organisations and foundations for a scholarship, such as the Greek Foundation of State Scholarships (IKY) or the Halkiopoulos Foundation. Also, every academic year, the student who achieves the highest overall average grade point average on his or her degree – provided that the grade point average is at least 8.51 – receives a monetary award, and is exempted from tuition fees should he/she wish enroll in the department’s Master’s programme.

Students who are in at least their third year of study can participate in on-the-job training in public and private sector institutions, including banks, research institutes, and multi-national firms. The Department’s on-the-job programme operates during the whole academic year and offers students employment for a period of 3 months. It is funded by the Operational Programme for Education and Life-long Learning, as part of the National Strategic Reference Framework (NSRF) 2007-2013, which is co-financed by the European Social Fund (ESF).

The department organises an open seminar series to inform students, faculty members, and the public in general on issues of current interest. Speakers with different academic and professional backgrounds from universities, European organisations, and private firms are invited to share their views, research and work in their area of expertise. All students are welcome to attend these seminars.

The European Student Exchange Programme Socrates-Erasmus offers students the opportunity to visit foreign universities for a semester and continue their studies in corresponding departments abroad. Faculty members also have the opportunity to cooperate with foreign universities on current issues of international research and education.
