The Department
The Department of Informatics of the Athens University of Economics and Business (AUEB) was founded in 1984, with the aim to provide innovative undergraduate and postgraduate education, along with research for the information and computing professions. Each year, the department welcomes approximately 250 undergraduate students along with many graduate students in its four specialized postgraduate programs and doctoral candidates.
Our department conducts pioneering and high-impact research in the numerous scientific areas of its research groups, which include computer systems and networks, information management and processing, multimedia and computer graphics, operations research and theoretical computer science. The 26 faculty members actively contribute to the progress of Computer Science and the development and collaboration with the domestic ICT industry, with an impressive research record, including more than 3.000 scientific publications and more than 80.000 citations to them. Furthermore, many faculty members have been Academic Professors in many European and American Universities and have served in scientific organizations and research institutes.
We provide our students with all the necessary qualifications for an excellent education. In terms of infrastructure, apart from the shared laboratory space among the departments, students have exclusive access to the departments three educational laboratories, equipped with state-of-the-art workstations, free wireless network and electronic facilities, including e-class, e-secretary and e-library.
The main goal of the undergraduate program is to prepare scientists, qualified for the development of the ICT sector and the engagement with all forms of entrepreneurship related to the informatics domain. Grate care has been given in developing a course syllabus with an emphasis hon solid theoretical foundations of computer science, in order to enable our graduates to fulfill many roles in the industry and society, adapt to the rapid-changing world of computing and cope with the scientific and technological challenges in Informatics.
Students have the opportunity to closely collaborate with the academic staff by undertaking an undergraduate thesis or working alongside the research groups in scientific and development projects. In addition, the department very actively participates in the University-wide internship programme, offering the students the opportunity to train and work in a wide range of established companies. Finally, students can take several courses from other University Departments, tailoring their curriculum to their specific needs and ambitions.
Once the bachelor diploma is obtained, the alumni follow a bright career full of opportunities in Greek and other European companies. The graduates can continue their studies by attending a postgraduate program in Greece or abroad.
