FOUNDATION – IDENTITY

The Statistics department was founded June 1989, under the 377/1989 PD, and started operating in the 1989-1990 academic year. It is the first entirely and solely Statistics department in Greece. The degree offered holds the name of the department. Its purpose is to promote and disseminate knowledge through research and teaching in the field of Statistics and its related subjects, both theoretical and applied, as well as educating high level executives for the private and public sector. Implementing this purpose is pursued through developing research and education, whose organization provides graduates with both theoretical knowledge as well as developing the ability to apply this knowledge in the real needs of various sectors of the economic activity (Hellenic Statistical Authority, public and private organizations, such as Ministries, Hospitals, Banks with a statistics department, Industry, Insurance Companies, Polling Companies, Research Centers, etc.). Finally, this purpose is also achieved by developing international contacts, the main expression of which is the Erasmus Mobility Program.

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM

The Department’s curriculum, issued at its establishment, was echoing all the contemporary trends in statistics, and was formed based on curriculums of corresponding international Statistics departments. It was revised in 1998, in an innovative, as regards to Greek universities, manner, since it was based on the logic of the educational units (rather than the courses) in order to be adapted to the European ECTS system.
Based on this system, each course corresponds to a number of ECTS’s mentioned in the program. To determine each courses ECTS’s, the total requirements are taken into account (lectures, papers etc). To obtain the Diploma, the student must acquire a total of 240 ECTS’s.
In 2001, the Department was evaluated by an international committee of four professors from the USA, Germany, Belgium and Ireland and ranked among the top Statistics departments internationally, both for its undergraduate and postgraduate studies, as well as the quality of its teaching staff and the infrastructure. It is worth noting that prior to its evaluation, the Department had received very positive comments from a number of significant personalities in the field of Statistics (D.R.Cox, C.R.Rao, L.Kish, B.Gnedenko, D.Bartholomew etc). It has also been universally acknowledged by many well known foreign universities both from statistics as well as from other economics departments (Business Administration, Finance, Banking, etc) through its European programs but also through the department’s graduates successfully following postgraduate studies abroad. Those of the Department's students, who participated in the Exchange Programs or attended post-graduate studies abroad, completed these studies successfully and with very favorable comments.
Finally, the students can attend the Program in Educational Sciences which leads to the Certificate of Pedagogical and Teaching Proficiency, and thus being able to participate in the ASEP exams for teachers as well as be employed as teachers in activities requiring pedagogical and teaching competence.

POSTGRADUATE STUDIES

Many of our graduates are accepted each year for postgraduate studies in the most known Universities, in Greece and abroad, and not just in Statistics departments. There is of course the prospect of continuing their studies in our postgraduate program for the acquisition of a Postgraduate Specialization Diploma, following a selection process. Our postgraduate graduates can be chosen as Doctoral Candidates of the Department, with the aim of obtaining a Ph.D. degree after producing an original research project. The Postgraduate Programs offered are as follows:

PhD PROGRAM

We welcome PhD applications from students with an excellent M.Sc. qualification and an interest in many areas of statistics like Bayesian statistics, stochastic modeling, financial mathematics, actuarial statistics, multivariate statistics and other.
The PhD Program’s aim is to prepare candidates that desire to follow an academic career, or more generally, a career in research.  The program’s graduates have the full ability to fulfill academic positions, as well as executive positions in businesses, banks and various other private and public sector organizations.

EMPLOYMENT PROSPECTS

Due to the many applications of Statistics, apart from the National Statistical Service and other Government Services (all of which have Statistics Departments), statisticians can also be employed in many fields of the private sector, such as insurance companies, banks, tourism, transport, polling companies etc.
The department recently conducted a research in order to determine the absorbency and type of employment of its graduates in the labor market. According to the research’s findings, there is a low unemployment rate during the first 3 or 4 years after graduation. The unemployment rate is at 5.1% and it mostly affects women, as there out of the 6 persons looking for work, 4 of them are women. A small percent of 2.5% continues their studies without working at the same time. 91.5% works and 5.1% also hold a second job. It is noteworthy that according to the survey, the largest percentage (45,76%) are employees with an indefinite term contract, 28,81% are employed civil servants, 12,71% are employees with a fixed term contract and there is also a very low percentage of freelancers.  Additionally, the total percentage of students that started working before completing their studies is very high (19.49%) and a very large number of them managed to find work within the first 2 years after their graduation.

THE DEPARTMENT'S LABS

i. Laboratory of Applied Statistics, Probability and Data Analysis, which involves 2 separate rooms.

The main lab room is located at the 3rd floor of the Antoniadou wing in the central University building (roomA35). This is the area that is used by undergraduate students, PhD candidates as well as temporal teaching staff. The lab’s equipment involves 4 SUN workstations, 2 UPS’s, 1 Dell server with a local network of 45 PC’s, 2 printers, 1 scanner, a diaphanoscope, and a projector connected to a pc. In a separate room in the lab there are 9 workstations for the PhD candidates of the Statistics Department. The second room is located at the 4rth floor of the Antoniadou wing and is commonly used with the Research Laboratories of the Department of informatics.

ii. Laboratory of Statistical Methodology which is located at the 2nd floor of the Evelpidon building (47A Evelpidon str. & 33 Lefkados str.) and it is available to the postgraduate students of the Department. This lab has one central pc and a local network of 22 pc’s with Windows operating system. There are also 1 interactive board, 4 projectors and 2 laptops, while being fully refurbished.

iii.Stochastic Modeling and Applications Laboratory, which is located at the 2nd floor of the new building, 2 Troias str (cohoused with the Computational and Bayesian Statistical Laboratory).

iv. Computational and Bayesian Statistical Laboratory, which is located at the 2nd floor of the new building, 2 Troias str (cohoused with the Stochastic Modeling and Applications Laboratory).
